Baltimore Riots

Riots that started after the death of a black man in Baltimore reached a critical point last night when thousands of police officers and National Guard troopers were ordered to back up beleaguered officers. The clash of authorities and protestors lasted almost until the morning. Almost 30 people were arrested, 15 police officers injured and a few dozen cars and shops were vandalized.

Due to the events happening all over the city the last few days the state of Maryland declared a state of emergency. Safety of the citizens has been endangered since rioters looted shop and torched cars. Protestors are mainly young African American men enraged by recent cases of police violence in which black men were killed. If the degree of violence continues to rise this way we may see another scenario similar to Ferguson.

Late Freddie Gray’s family appealed to people to stop with the madness, but their voice didn’t reach out far enough. During fights with police reporters were also injured, some of them were attacked and robbed. Right now police are searching through video material to identify rioters.

The riots first started on the west side of the city and they remained in that area until last night when fires were lit on the east as well. Schools in Baltimore will be closed for a day and from Tuesday the city will schedule a curfew.

Maryland’s police superintendent William Pallozzi ordered over 500 police officers to the city and asked another 5000 troops from the Mid-Atlantic region. The response was quick and according to Linda Sight, the National Guard commander Adjutant General, her troops are ready to protect civilians and their properties.

The campus of the University of Maryland will also close early today alongside corporate offices and the famous Lexington Market. Orioles baseball game against Boston Red Sox was also cancelled as a precaution.

News of Gray’s death brought unrest in to the black community and soon after his funeral riots started. Participants used social media to organize themselves which turned to fighting and looting.

After Sunday’s events when 34 people were arrested and dozens injured, the Police Department of Baltimore said that the riot encouraged gangs to participate and try to take out law enforcement.

Cause of death of 25 years old Gray is still being investigated. Six police officers were suspended until the prosecution and the US Justice Department is already looking into the use of force inside Baltimore’s Police Department.

What is known so far is that Gray needed medical attention sooner and by the words of bystanders he was clearly in pain during the arrest, asking for help no one gave him.
