Another extremist attack induced by art occurred in Texas this Sunday at a cartoon exhibition organized by an anti-Muslim group. While people who had attended were choosing the best Mohammed cartoon police had to react against Muslim activists with two of them being shot dead.

There is still no official report who might have been behind the attack, but it is believed that the two gunmen were supporters of the Islamic State.

Caricatures of Mohammed have been a cause of similar attacks all over the world previously. The most recent attack in Paris showed that Muslim militants are very serious about any humorous representation of their religion. The Charlie Hedbo attack resulted in 12 journalists being killed this January; fortunately no one else was killed in the Texas attack.

During the FBI action one of the gunmen was identified as Elton Simpson. His apartment was raided which later showed that he was already under investigation for terrorism. Also, his latest Twitter post was marked with #TexasAttack.

The cartoon exhibition was organized by an anti-Muslim group called the American Freedom Defense Initiative in a suburban part of Dallas. Their activities are not something that depicts American society very well, but they are widely supported for their actions. For instance, their event had a foreign visitor, Dutch politician Geert Wilderson, well known for his far-right oriented views. His politics are openly anti-Muslim and his biggest project is a fight against Muslim immigration in Europe.

“This is an attack on the liberties of all of us!”said Wilderson after the attack, adding that he hopes this attack was not provoked with his presence since he is already on couple of Al-Qaeda hit lists. He doesn’t see this event as a bad thing, but as a presentation of freedom of speech.

Two men drove into the event and opened fire at a security guard. Immediately after that a police officer reacted and killed both of the men, ending their attack in seconds. The guard was shot in the ankle requiring treatment but was released later that day.

The event organization said in an official statement that they didn’t expect something like this to happen, but they were prepared just in case with their security level on maximum.

The event was billed as a “freedom of speech” contest with around 200 people taking part and being present during the attack.

Cartoons and journalism pieces were already reasons for extremist attacks in the past so some people see this event as provocation of Muslims, while others support it and call for patriotic unification against extremists.
