Canadian Tourist Dies After Boat Collides With A Whale
According to authorities Jennifer Karren, 35, of Calgary, Alberta has been identified as the tourist who was killed when the small inflatable tour boat she was on collided with a whale off the coast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The incident happened on Wednesday a quarter-mile from the Bay of Santa Maria and it has been confirmed that the boat which was returning from a snorkel tour was carrying nine people when a side of the craft collided with the whale.
Two other people aboard the vessel were injured however Karen unfortunately fell in the water but was rescued by a tour guide and another passenger who jumped in an brought her back aboard. A nurse who was on board as a passenger performed CPR as the captain of the vessel returned the boat to shore.
It was said the captain informed naval rescue officials immediately after it happened and the skipper had done everything he could to avoid hitting the whale. The Canadian woman was rushed to hospital and was pronounced dead, officials said.
The tour company’s general director, Felipe Diez-Canedo expressed regret that one of its guests had died even though she had received first aid and was transported to hospital as soon as she was brought back to shore.
The Mexican Federal Attorney General’s Office for the Protection of the Environment is investigating the incident.
