Nun Aged 71 Raped in India

Students of the school convent seek justice.

The latest rape case to come to light is of a 71 year old nun in Eastern India after a group of men broke into a convent school and its attached staff residences.

The gang of robbers struck the Christian school on Saturday, officials have said and it has been confirmed that one of the men had raped an elderly woman after she had raised the alarm and resisted the robbery. The rape was apparently punishment for it.

It is unclear whether the attack was carried out by one of the men or several of them as a church official had previously stated that it was three or four of the men who had raped the woman.

The woman was later tied up long with two other nuns and a security guard. The robbers have managed to steal cash worth thousands of dollars and other items such as laptops.

The victim who was raped is currently in hospital being treated for her injuries and said to be recovering well physically, however mentally she will only recover in time the Police Authorities have said.

Father Dominic Emmanuel of the Delhi Catholic Archdiocese has said in televised comments that such acts of rape to women are shameful however the rape of a nun is much worse as she is a women who has dedicated her life to God and all her life remained a virgin.

The investigation into the attack and the robbery is still ongoing and no arrests have been made yet, say Police officials.
